You know you are in a special place from the moment you approach this lovely property. Stone walkways take you on a lush trail that lead you from the main house, through various gardens, to the pool, and on to the guest quarters.
Inside the main house – an updated Colonial Farmhouse from the 1880's - one enters into a cook’s eat-in kitchen with stainless steel appliances, pantry, and gleaming copper counter tops. There is a café table with two chairs and a window seat or pull up to the kitchen counter where there are several stools. Just next to the kitchen is a formal dining area that seats eight guests. A wood stove warms the ground floor areas nicely! Wander in, for after-dinner drinks, to the fabulous living room/sunroom that is used year round, or sit in the cozy library sitting area with cable tv, dvd, and vcr . There is one full bath with claw-foot tub/shower on the main floor as well as a laundry room and home office on this floor.
Upstairs there are three comfortable and charming bedrooms: a queen bed in the master with a Juliet balcony, and a full bed in the second and third guest bedrooms. These bedrooms share a luxurious full boudoir bathroom with vanity, and claw-foot tub with shower.
The main floor of the guesthouse, that overlooks the pool and courtyard, is a wonderfully large, open gathering room with a comfy, inviting seating area, kitchenette, tv/dvd/stereo media center, and mini workout area with exercise bike, pilates/yoga dvds and light weights. This space has French doors that open to the pool area! Upstairs you have a large bedroom suite with sitting room, queen bed, office, and full bathroom – shower only.
For outside entertaining, you have several options. There is a raised mahogany deck off the main house complete with cushioned wrought iron furniture, umbrella and wood-fired Primo, ceramic egg grill for adventurous types. Or, sit on the front porch overlooking the flower garden and apples trees and watch the world go slowly by. A tree-shaded area in the pea stone courtyard is wonderfully set up for lounging or dining. The pool area, with gardens of succulents, lavendar, and grasses is grotto-like and protected from view by its lush surroundings. A covered cabana area, connected to a barn, offers shade while the pool deck offers full sun on comfortable chaises. Or, take a nap on the hammock under the elms!
Fun things to do in and around Ashley Falls include: biking – two bikes available – Bartholomew’s Cobble for nature hikes, walking /jogging loop town and through the quiet historic town with water falls, past grazing cows, canoeing on the Housatonic River, and star gazing under the big open sky! Local farm stands, farmers' market and grocery stores are closeby. The home has been an insider favorite with those who have enjoyed the Ashley Falls Historical Garden Tour. It is now offered as a rental property for a limited time only.
The Summer 2010 rate is $5500 per week or $9,000 for two weeks. Please inquire for specific dates and for possible shorter-term availability during vacation periods.
